Charging records become useful when they answer an operating or investment question. A total session count may describe activity, but it does not show when users face pressure, whether long sessions reduce availability or where additional capacity may be justified.
The questions below reflect the analytical structure used in EventBinder's Hong Kong EV charging research work.
When do sessions begin?
Count session starts by hour, weekday and date. A heat map makes recurring busy periods visible and also highlights unusual days that need separate explanation.
This view supports operating-hour decisions, maintenance scheduling and later demand forecasting.
How long do vehicles occupy a port?
Compare charging duration by weekday, location and port. Use the median and distribution, not only the average, because a small number of very long sessions can distort the result.
Long occupancy may reflect user behaviour, vehicle type, charging speed or limited alternatives. The data identifies where to investigate; it does not establish the cause by itself.
Where is demand high relative to available ports?
Calculate sessions per available port for each area. This distinguishes a district with many sessions and many ports from one where a smaller network is under greater pressure.
The ratio should be reviewed with port type, availability and data completeness before it is used for an investment decision.
Are nearby locations showing the same pressure?
Map high-demand and long-duration ports, then compare nearby locations within an appropriate distance. A geographic cluster may indicate a wider capacity gap, while an isolated result may point to a site-specific issue.
Does the model support a decision?
Forecasts and scoring models should be checked against held-out records and explained in operational terms. A model is useful only when the organisation can understand the input, the uncertainty and the decision it is meant to support.
The final output should connect each finding to a possible action, such as monitoring a location, changing an operating rule, investigating an anomaly or assessing additional capacity.
